Born in Anson, Maine. Early and influential Montecito farmer. Arrived in Montecito in 1868 (following his daughter, Frances Dinsmore Hosmer), purchased San Ysidro Ranch and grew first oranges in the valley (1,500 trees). Storke, Yda, pg. 276. Arrived in Santa Barbara in 1868 as one of the three colonels (with WA Hayne and Bond) and purchased land the large San Ysidro Rancho against the Montecito foothills. Served in the Maine legislature, and was a lumber baron in the Kennebec River Valley. LOst his lumber business in Panic of 1857. Drove cattle and horses with his brother to Humboldt area of California. Moved his family to Hydesville where he opened a mercantile. Moved to Santa Barbara for Augustus' (Dinsmore's son's) health. Bought two blocks on Garden Street from Brinkerhoff. July 1868, purchased 130 acres in Montecto from Elisha Pierce (the current San Ysidro Ranch) for $3600. Introduced thin-skinned Florida style oranges, grew sweet potatoes, almonds, bananas, strawberries and poi.  Myrick 14, 20, 57-61

Born in Charleston, SC, (1821, Storke), son of Robert Y. Hayne, a SC Congressman and Senator and Governor and was instrumental in the political debates for states rights that resulted in the Civil War. W. A. lawyer, elected SC legislature, and voted for the "ordinance of seccession", and served as a Confederate soldier. Lost estate in war, emigrated to SF in 1867. Bought 20 acres in Montecito and brought first orange trees to the region. Founding Board member of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara and early trustee of the Santa Barbara Cemetery to 1883. Born in Newport, Vermont. Arrived in Santa Barbara in 1867. Owner of a lumber yard, built Stearns Wharf for commercial shipping in Santa Barbara with loan from Col. Hollister. Also founding stockholder in Santa Barbara College and campaigned for a railroad line through Santa Barbara. Purchased the Morning Press from Hollister, but his editor was shot by a candidate for District Attorney when the editor had uncovered and published the man’s scandalous practices.

Born in Ohio, only surviving child of at least 6. Arrived in Santa Barbara in 1855 (Storke) or 1869 (Redmon). "He liked the town, but was of the opinion that it lacked any sort of proper architectural style." [Redmon] Built Colonel William W. Hollister’s Santa Barbara College and many Italiante mansions (Thomas Hope, Joseph Sexton, Thomas Dibblee, Mortimer Cook, Amasa Lincoln) and commercial and government buildings including the original Arlington Hotel, the original Courthouse, the first Unitarian, Congregational, and Methodist churches, and the first City Hall. His work remains in the Thomas Hope house and the Joseph Sexton residence in Goleta.  Initiated the idea of a stately, palm-lined ocean-front boulevard. Mayor in early 1890s. Born in Freedom, Maine; became a mechanic, to CA in 1858, 1863 built quartz mine in Sonora, Mexico; back to San  Fran to 1871; January 1872 came to Montecito, purchased 19 acres; started with almonds (failed) then peaches and plums (failed) and then oranges (and did well); elected Supervisor 1884 and 1888; married Frances Dinsmore 1863 in SF (father Bradbury Thomas Dinsmore arrived in Santa Barbara in 1868). Storke, Yda, pg. 276. Rev. Thomas Starr-King wed Thomas and Frances. Was a machinist by trade, in both Maine and Sacramento. Involved with a silver mine in Mexico for a time (1863) where he erected a stamp mill. Frances was gifted 17 acres at the south corner of the present San Ysidro and East Valley Roads in 1872. Hosmer started an orchard here: oranges, lemons, almonds, plums. Appointed Justice of the Peace in Montecito, 1877. Served two four-year terms as county supervisor starting 1884. Myrick 62-63.

Born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. Studied medicine. 1849 to gold fields. 1851 opened general merchandise store in San Diego; elected to SD city council and as President of City Board, also Mayor. Acted a lieutenant of troop that put down an Indian rebellion in 1851. 1865 came to Santa Barbara; 1883 started Santa Barbara Independent; acted as a Director of the World's Fair, Chicago, 1893. Cemetery Board President for approximately seven years. Left the board with Huse in dispute; never paid for his plot. Storke, Yda, pg. 493. BORN: CONCORD, N.H.**AGE-81 YRS. 2 MOS. 11 DYS. ** APPOINTED BY PRES. GRANT AS POSTMASTER OF SANTA BARBARA IN 1868. FOUNDER OF THE DAILY NEWS IN SANTA BARBARA IN 1893. DIED IN SAN FRANCISCO IN 1909.
